Garden Tending:  Not Just for Plants!

Your life is like a garden; you’re the gardener who tends it.  You decide what grows in it and what you need to weed out.

You can do a lot to shape how your garden grows.  While you can’t control the occasional undesirable seeds that blow into your garden, you can control what happens once they land.

Try to go with this green/growth-related metaphor, which is a useful 30,000-foot view of how you should manage your life.  Each day of your life should be a healthy harvest, yielding the results of you living out your WHY.

Think your life’s a bed of weeds and it’s too late to do anything about it?  Just like in a real garden, you’ll have to get dirty!  Perhaps practically be on your hands and knees, yank out those weeds (i.e., anything undesirable) and then spray down a film of weed-killer to keep them from growing back (i.e., put systems or support in place to keep moving forward with your life goals).

Here’s the thing about gardening (and life):  you’re always going to get dirty.  Whether you’re faced with beautiful flower garden or a weed-laden nightmare, either way you toil to keep it that way or morph the latter into the former.

There is no such thing as “clean gardening.”  Or a perfect life.  It’s dirty work.  Sweaty work.  Often uncomfortable work.

So if you’ve gotta get down in the dirt no matter what, make it worthwhile.

Are you happy with the direction of your life?  Do you need to plant seeds (i.e., set S.M.A.A.R.T. goals) to eventually harvest your desired results?

In fact, you can plan out the garden of your life daily, so you’ll know how much tending the garden of your life actually needs.

Begin with the end in mind.  Know what you want life to yield you in terms of results (i.e., living in harmony with your WHY) and then calculate what season you’ll have it by.  Then you’ll know how to nurture the seeds you plant; many times you can’t just “set it and forget it” so when you fail to plan you ultimately plan to fail.

Tend that garden.  If you have to do backbreaking work to till the soil, instead of dialing up the drama, just grab a hoe and start working.  Get your Dream Team to work with you!

Some plantings in the garden of life won’t need much attention but others will require strong direction to give them shape.  That’s the mystery of growth, whether it’s green things or YOU.

You never know how a garden (literal or figurative) is going to play out until it starts to unfold, but the good news is you just change and adapt your techniques as needed.

Just like you shouldn’t take it personally if your plants don’t grow as tall or as wide as you thought they might, don’t freak out if everything doesn’t turn out exactly as you’d like your life to unfold.  Relax and adapt your methods and you’ll eventually earn a “green thumb” when it comes to the garden of your life.
